Medical Center Houston Area Movers

The Medical Center

Houston’s Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, with more than 60 treatment and research facilities in the area. Among its facilities are the world’s largest cancer hospital and world’s largest children’s hospital, and a baby is delivered every 20 seconds in the Medical Center. In short, this is one of the most sophisticated centers of medicine in human history, but it’s also one of Houston’s nicest and more conveniently located neighborhoods.

Many of the area’s residents are medical workers – professionals who have more important things to do than pack and move a houseful of stuff. That’s why these professionals look to other professionals for their moving needs. An experienced Houston mover will ensure nothing holds up the moving process, so anyone moving to the Medical Center can get settled in right away.

History

In 1925, Hermann Hospital was opened in the area, and began treating its first patients. About a decade later, the M.D. Anderson Foundation was established, and its funding power would be instrumental in developing what would become the Medical Center. For example, in the 1940s, the M.D. Anderson Foundation used its funding to attract a new cancer research hospital that was under the University of Texas system.

From the mid-1940s on, the Medical Center would add new facilities at a near-constant rate. In 1946, a 1,000-bed naval hospital was opened and would later become a teaching hospital as well. Several additional facilities were also planned for 1946, including a Shriners Hospital. In 1953, the M.D. Anderson Hospital for Cancer Research was founded, and a year later, the Texas Children’s Hospital started taking patients. In 1962, one of the world’s leading heart surgery centers was founded, the Texas Heart Institute, and it remains a valuable cardiology research facility.

Unsurprisingly, most of the neighborhoods in the area developed as the Medical Center added more and more facilities. Today, it’s a desirable destination for families and singles, as it’s centrally located, filled with affluent neighborhoods and close to some of the best attractions Houston has to offer.

Shopping

Since the Medical Center is close to the heart of Houston, it’s also close to some of its most popular shopping centers. They include:

  • Shops at Three Corners – Shops at Three Corners is half a mile south of the Medical Center, and has a few grocery stores, a Target and some mainstream clothing shops like Ross. While the center isn’t a go-to for upscale shopping, it has the essentials and is only a few minutes away.
  • Rice Village – Rice Village is also close to the Medical Center, sitting about a mile away to the west. Rice Village is one of Houston’s most active outdoor malls, with several boutique clothing stores, a few hobby stores and plenty of places to eat, sit and chat.
  • Highland Village – Highland Village is considered to be one of the top shopping centers in the entire city, along with the Galleria Mall. Highland Village is a walkable strip of luxury clothing, jewelry, footwear, furniture and houseware stores, along with some upscale restaurant options as well.

When it comes to parks, the Medical Center occupies an enviable position. Houston’s second-largest park, Hermann Park, borders the Medical Center to the east, so it’s within walking distance to many of the area’s residents. Hermann Park is filled with things to do, with several playgrounds, paddle boats, a train to ride on, Miller Outdoor Theatre and the Houston Zoo. The Museum District also overlaps parts of Hermann Park, and the city’s best museums are here.

Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park are several miles to the north. Buffalo Bayou Park runs along the bayou and is laced with walking, biking and jogging trails. There are also several features of note, including fountains and memorials.

Memorial Park is the city’s largest green space, and one of the biggest urban parks in the country. It’s common to see hundreds of people walking, running and playing sports here every day, even during the hottest days of the year. Memorial Park also houses an arboretum, a driving range and plenty of hiking trails.
