History of Atascocita
Atascocita’s history is Houston’s history, as the community doesn’t have roots that reach back into the 19th century like so many other parts of the city. During the 1970s, Houston’s economy was starting to take off, and the result was a lot of development all over the region. By this time, the city had already annexed large portions of what would become Atascocita, and construction was widespread for the entire decade. People rushed to the area over the coming years, and by the 90s, there were more than a dozen neighborhoods in the area, with more on the way.
Atascocita remains noteworthy for its development and growth. Between 2000 and 2010, the population nearly doubled from about 36,000 to around 66,000. Given Atascocita’s continued growth and development, it’s a trend that’s likely to continue.

- Atascocita Commons and Trails – Atascocita is like many recent Houston communities in that it is carefully developed. Part of that careful development is having an extensive commercial district near the village’s neighborhoods. In Atascocita, that’s the Commons and Trails, and they offer a variety of options to residents. Shopping options include a Target, a Lowe’s, a variety of clothing and home décor stores, an H-E-B (Texans love their H-E-B), as well as some craft stores and a number of services.
- Deerbrook Mall – Deerbrook Mall is the closest major shopping center to Atascocita and is only about five miles down the road. The mall is surrounded by a variety of restaurants and a large hobby shop. Inside, Deerbrook Mall offers a variety of clothing stores, from mainstream department stores to boutique shops. There are stores selling jewelry, home goods and shoes, as well as a movie theatre, a hair salon, and several places to dine.

Atascocita is surrounded by parks, and some of the state’s best examples of natural beauty can be enjoyed via a short drive. Some of the most popular green spots in the area include:
- Lake Houston Wilderness Park – Atascocita residents are fortunate in that they have one of the city’s largest and most pristine nature reserves just up the road. Lake Houston forms the eastern border of Atascocita, and its Wilderness Park is at the norther tip of the lake. Camping, hiking, fishing and boating are all options here, and there’s educational exhibits available to enhance the experience.
- Sam Houston National Forest – The sprawling Sam Houston National Forest, one of only four national forests in the U.S., is about 30 miles north of Atascocita. Sam Houston National Forest is a destination for outdoorspeople, and there are several camping sites, areas to hike, jog, cycle, fish and plenty of trails for simply enjoying the forest.

- Golf, golf, golf. It’s a favorite pastime among Atascocita residents, and there are three courses in Atascocita. They include the Villages at Tour 18, Walden on Lake Houston and The Clubs at Kingwood.
- Lake Houston is impressive, but Lake Livingston is even larger and offers a lot of room for boaters, waterskiing and wakeboarding. It’s adjacent to Sam Houston National Forest.
- Atascocita is far enough away from the heart of the city that there are nearby farms, and some of them are open to the public for fun and educational experiences.
- Downtown Houston is only 25 miles south of Atascocita and is home to the Symphony, the Opera, the Ballet, the Alley Theatre and Discovery Green, which hosts a variety of events and art installations. The city also affords the chance to catch a game, whether it’s the Astros, the Texans or the Rockets.
- The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is 25 miles north and regularly attracts major musical acts.
