Labor-Only Movers

Already have the truck, trailer, or storage container? You just need the muscle and the know-how. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage sends trained movers to load and unload rental trucks, PODS and portable containers, and move heavy furniture inside your home or office, without a moving truck on the bill.

Our labor-only crews are the same full-time employees who handle our full-service moves, so you get careful packing of the truck, protected furniture, and people who have done this thousands of times, at a fraction of the cost of a full move.

Moving Help Without the Truck, From Movers You Can Trust

Renting a truck or booking a container can save money. The part that costs people is the loading: furniture stacked badly shifts on the highway, a dresser gets dropped on the ramp, or a weekend disappears carrying a sofa up three flights of stairs.

Labor-only service puts trained movers on that part of the job. We pad and wrap your furniture, take apart what needs taking apart, and load the truck or container tight and balanced so nothing moves in transit. At the other end, a crew unloads it and puts each piece in the right room.

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage has served Houston since 1969. We are family-owned, licensed, and insured, and our crews are trained full-time employees, never day labor picked up for the afternoon.

Trusted Moving Labor By Many

Customers book our labor-only crews for the same reason they book our full-service moves: people who show up on time, work carefully, and do not cut corners when nobody is watching.

Why Choose Our Labor-Only Movers

Hiring movers by the hour only saves money if the crew knows what it is doing. A badly packed truck costs more in broken furniture than it saved in rent.

Our Labor-Only Moving Services

Choose the help you need, from a two-hour truck load to a full day of loading, unloading, and furniture setup.

Truck & Trailer Loading

Rental trucks and trailers loaded heavy-to-light and floor-to-ceiling, with furniture padded and strapped so the load does not shift on the road.

PODS & Container Loading

Portable storage containers packed tight and balanced. A well-loaded container holds more and arrives with less damage.

Unloading & Setup

At the new home, a crew unloads the truck or container, places each piece in the right room, and reassembles beds and furniture.

In-Home Furniture Moving

Heavy furniture moved between rooms or floors for a remodel, new flooring, or a staging project. Need boxes packed too? Add packing services.

How Much Do Labor-Only Movers Cost?

Labor-only moving is billed by crew size and time. A typical job runs between about $325 and $600, and most jobs are quoted as two movers with a two-hour minimum. The ranges below are typical local industry estimates for planning purposes. They are not a JT Melia quote. For a full comparison with a rental truck or container, read our labor-only movers guide.

Job Typical crew Est. hours Typical range
Studio or 1 bedroom, load only2 movers2 to 3 hours$325 to $500
2 bedroom, load only2 movers3 to 4 hours$450 to $700
3 bedroom, load only3 movers4 to 6 hours$700 to $1,200
4+ bedroom, or load and unload3 to 4 movers6 to 8 hours$1,000 to $1,800
In-home furniture moving2 movers2 hours$325 to $450
What affects your price

Stairs and elevators, long carries from the door to the truck, the amount of furniture that needs to be taken apart, and whether boxes are packed and ready when the crew arrives all change how long the job takes. Separate crews at each end of the move add a second visit.

How to get an accurate quote

Tell us the size of the home, the type and size of the truck or container, stairs or elevators at each address, and whether you need loading, unloading, or both. We will tell you the crew size and a price before you book.

Would rather we drive too? A full-service local move includes the truck, the crew, and the driving. Call 713-683-8585 or request a free estimate.

Our Labor-Only Moving Process

icon

Tell Us About the Job

Let us know what is being moved, what you are loading into, where the truck or container will be parked, and whether you need help at one end or both.

We recommend the crew size and give you a price before you book.

icon

Book Around Your Truck

Pick a time that lines up with your truck rental pickup or container delivery.

If the move spans two days or two cities in the Houston area, we can schedule loading and unloading separately.

icon

Moving Day

Our crew arrives with pads, wrap, dollies, and tools, protects and disassembles furniture as needed, and loads the truck or container so it travels safely.

For unloading, we place every piece where you want it and reassemble what we took apart.

Labor-Only Moving Service Areas

Our labor-only crews meet your truck or container anywhere in the area, from apartment complexes inside the Loop to driveways in the suburbs.

Popular areas include West University Place, Bellaire, Jersey Village, Cypress, Katy and The Woodlands. See all service areas.

Loading Rental Trucks & Portable Containers

How a truck is loaded matters as much as what goes in it. A good load is built in tiers: heavy appliances and dressers against the front wall, mattresses and tables standing on edge, boxes stacked heavy to light, and every tier tied off before the next one starts.

Containers need even more care. They are lifted onto a trailer and sometimes tilted, so anything not packed tight and secured will move. We fill gaps with soft items, keep weight centered over the axle area, and strap the load in sections.

Our crews also protect the furniture on its way into the truck: padded and shrink-wrapped, with legs and hardware taken off and bagged where needed.

If you are still deciding between a rental truck, a container, and a full-service move, our labor-only guide compares the real costs.

Unloading & Furniture Setup

Unloading is where tired people get hurt and furniture gets scraped on door frames. Our crew takes it off the truck or out of the container in the reverse order it went in, room by room.

Tell us which room each piece belongs in, or label boxes by room ahead of time, and the crew places everything where it goes instead of stacking it in the garage.

Beds, tables, desks, and other furniture we took apart are reassembled, and the pads and wrap go back with us. If you only need help at the destination, we can unload a truck or container that someone else loaded.

Moving Heavy Furniture Within Your Home

Not every labor-only job involves a truck. Sometimes the heavy pieces just need to move to a different room, a different floor, or out of the way for a few days.

Our crews protect the floors and door frames, move the furniture, and put it back where it belongs when the work is done.

In-home moving help is often booked when:

* New flooring or carpet is being installed.
* A room is being painted or remodeled.
* A home is being staged for sale.
* A nursery, office, or guest room is being set up.
* A heavy piece needs to go up or down stairs.
* Furniture is being moved to or from a garage or storage area.

If the furniture needs to leave the house for a while, ask about renovation storage.

Labor-Only Moving Questions, Answered

Labor-only moving is simple once you know what is included and what is not.

Here are answers to the questions customers ask most often before booking moving help without a truck.

What is labor-only moving?

Arrow Down

Labor-only moving means you provide the truck, trailer, or container and we provide the trained movers. Our crew loads, unloads, or moves furniture, but we do not drive your belongings anywhere.

Can I hire movers without a truck?

Arrow Down

Yes. That is exactly what labor-only service is for. Many customers rent a truck or book a PODS or similar container and hire us to do the heavy lifting at one or both ends.

How much do labor-only movers cost?

Arrow Down

A typical labor-only job runs between about $325 and $600, usually quoted as two movers with a two-hour minimum. Larger homes and jobs with stairs or long carries take more crew time.

Do you load PODS and other portable containers?

Arrow Down

Yes. We load and unload PODS and other portable storage containers. Containers need to be packed tight and balanced because they are lifted and moved on a trailer, and our crews load them with that in mind.

Do your movers bring equipment?

Arrow Down

Yes. Our crews bring furniture pads, shrink wrap, dollies, straps, and the tools to take apart and reassemble beds and furniture. You provide the truck or container and any boxes you have packed.

Can you unload a truck that someone else loaded?

Arrow Down

Yes. We can unload any truck or container, including one you loaded yourself or one that arrived from out of state. Let us know what is on it and how far the carry is to the door.

Will you drive the rental truck?

Arrow Down

No. Labor-only service does not include driving. If you would rather we handle the truck and the driving as well, a full-service local move includes everything.

Can you also pack my boxes?

Arrow Down

Yes. Packing can be added to a labor-only job, either for the whole home or just the kitchen and fragile items. It adds crew time, so mention it when you request a quote.

Is my furniture covered while you are loading it?

Arrow Down

Yes. We are a licensed and insured moving company, so you are protected while our crew is handling your belongings. Coverage for the trip itself depends on your truck rental or container company, so check what their policy includes.

How far in advance should I book labor-only help?

Arrow Down

One to two weeks ahead is usually enough, and more around month-end and summer weekends when truck rentals are busiest. Book the crew for the same window as your truck pickup or container delivery.
