Local Movers

Moving across town in Houston means planning around traffic, heat, parking, and the clock, because local moves are billed by the hour. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage runs local moves every day across the metro, with crews that know how long it really takes to get from the Heights to Sugar Land at four in the afternoon.

We give you a clear hourly rate and a realistic time estimate up front, then send a trained full-time crew that works efficiently from the first box to the last piece of furniture.

A Local Moving Company That Knows the Area

On a local move, every hour counts. A crew that shows up late, wanders through the house figuring out a plan, or gets stuck on the 610 Loop at rush hour is costing you money.

Our local moves are planned before the truck leaves our facility. We know the access at both addresses, the route between them, and when to avoid the worst traffic. The crew arrives with the right size truck, the right number of movers, and the pads, wrap, and tools to start working right away.

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage has moved Houston homes and businesses since 1969. We are family-owned and licensed, and every local move is handled by trained full-time employees, never day labor.

Trusted Local Movers Since 1969

Customers recommend our local crews because they show up on time, work steadily, and finish when they said they would. On an hourly move, that is what saves you money.

Why Choose Our Local Moving Company

On a local move you pay for time. The difference between a good crew and an average one shows up directly on the bill.

How Much Do Local Movers Cost?

Local moves are billed by the hour, based on the number of movers and the truck. Time starts when the crew arrives and usually includes the drive between your two addresses. The hourly rates below are typical local industry estimates for planning purposes. They are not a JT Melia quote. For a comparison of hourly and flat-rate pricing, read our flat-rate vs. hourly guide.

Crew Typical job Typical hourly rate
2 movers + truckStudio to 2 bedroom, small moves$120 to $170 per hour
3 movers + truck2 to 3 bedroom homes$160 to $220 per hour
4 movers + truck4 bedroom homes, larger offices$200 to $280 per hour
Each additional moverLarge homes, difficult access$40 to $60 per hour
MinimumSmall moves and single itemsUsually 2 to 3 hours
What affects your total

The total is the hourly rate times the time the job takes. Stairs, elevators, long walks to the truck, furniture that needs to be taken apart, unpacked boxes, and rush-hour drives all add time. Packing materials and specialty items such as pianos are priced separately.

How to keep the hours down

Have every box packed and taped before the crew arrives, reserve elevators and parking at both addresses, clear a path to the door, and label boxes by room. A well-prepared move can take hours less than an unprepared one.

Moving more than about 50 miles? Longer moves are priced by weight and distance. See our long-distance movers, call 713-683-8585, or request a free estimate.

Moving Day

The crew arrives on time, walks through the plan with you, protects floors and doorways, and loads your home.

At the new address, furniture and boxes go to the right rooms, beds are set up, and you sign off before the clock stops.

Local Moves Across the Metro

On a local move, the route between your two addresses matters, and our crews plan it before moving day.

Popular areas include Katy, Jersey Village, Cypress, Klein, The Woodlands and Atascocita. See all service areas.

Timing a Local Move

When you move affects how long the move takes, and on an hourly move that is what you pay for.

Morning starts are the best choice for most local moves. Crews are fresh, the heat has not set in, and the drive between addresses usually happens after the morning rush. A move that has to cross the 610 Loop or the Katy Freeway between four and seven in the afternoon can easily add an hour of drive time.

Mid-week and mid-month dates are the easiest to book. The last few days of each month, Saturdays, and the summer months between May and August fill up first, especially for apartment moves when leases turn over.

Our guide to the best time to move covers seasons, weather, and hurricane season planning.

Same-Day & Short-Notice Local Moves

Sometimes a move cannot wait: a closing moves up, a lease falls through, or a family situation changes overnight.

Because our crews and trucks are local, we can often fit short-notice local moves into the schedule, especially mid-week. Call us directly rather than booking online, and we will tell you honestly what is available.

Short-notice moves go fastest when the essentials are ready: boxes packed and labeled, a clear path to the door, and access arranged at the new address. If packing is not done, ask about adding packing services to the job.

Local Moves With Storage in Between

Not every local move goes straight from one address to the other. When dates do not line up, your belongings can go from the old place into our secure warehouse and out to the new one when it is ready.

Because it is all local, the same crew can handle both legs, and you avoid renting a self-storage unit and moving everything twice yourself.

A local move with storage is often useful when:

* You have to leave your current home before the new one is available.
* The new home needs floors, paint, or repairs first.
* You are moving into a smaller home and keeping some furniture.
* You are building a new home.
* You are moving out while a home is being sold or staged.

Local Moving Questions, Answered

Local moves are simple once you know how the clock works.

Here are answers to the questions customers ask most often about local moving.

What counts as a local move?

Arrow Down

A local move is a move within the same metro area, generally under about 50 miles. Local moves are billed by the hour. Longer moves are priced by weight and distance.

How much do local movers cost per hour in Houston?

Arrow Down

Typical rates run about $120 to $170 per hour for two movers and a truck, and $160 to $220 per hour for three movers. Your total depends on how long the move takes, which depends on the size of the move, the access, and preparation.

Is there a minimum charge?

Arrow Down

Most local moves have a minimum of two to three hours. Small moves and single items are still welcome; the minimum just covers the crew and truck for the trip.

Does the drive time count?

Arrow Down

Yes. Time between your two addresses is part of the move. Scheduling around rush hour keeps that drive short.

How long does a local move take?

Arrow Down

A studio or one-bedroom often takes two to four hours. A three-bedroom house usually takes five to eight hours. Stairs, elevators, and unpacked boxes add time.

Can you do a same-day or next-day move?

Arrow Down

Often, yes, especially mid-week. Call us directly for short-notice moves rather than booking online, and we will tell you what is available.

What can I do to save money on a local move?

Arrow Down

Pack and label everything before the crew arrives, reserve elevators and parking at both addresses, take apart small furniture yourself if you can, and choose a morning start mid-week or mid-month.

Do you provide packing materials?

Arrow Down

Yes. Our crews bring furniture pads, shrink wrap, and tools to every move. Boxes and packing materials can be purchased, and full or partial packing can be added to the move.

Do you move offices locally too?

Arrow Down

Yes. We move offices and small businesses across the metro, often after hours or on weekends to avoid downtime.

Are your local movers licensed and insured?

Arrow Down

Yes. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage is licensed by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV No. 0000005457), with cargo and liability coverage on every move. Every local move is handled by trained full-time employees.
