Packing Services

Packing is the part of a move most people underestimate. A three-bedroom home can take a family a week of evenings, and the boxes packed at midnight are the ones that arrive broken. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage sends trained packers to wrap, box, and label your home, usually in a single day.

Choose full packing for the whole house, partial packing for the kitchen and fragile items, or unpacking at the new home. Our packers use professional-grade materials and the same methods our crews use on long-distance moves.

Professional Packers Families Trust

Most moving damage starts inside the box. Plates packed flat instead of on edge, glasses without dividers, a lamp rattling in a carton with nothing around it. By the time the box is opened at the new house, it is too late.

Our packers wrap every fragile item individually, use dish packs and cell kits for kitchenware, wardrobe boxes for closets, and purpose-made cartons for mirrors, art, and televisions. Every box is filled so nothing shifts, sealed, and labeled with the room it belongs in.

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage has packed and moved Houston homes since 1969. Our packers are trained full-time employees, so the same standards apply whether we are packing a studio or a five-bedroom house.

Trusted Packers By Many

Customers tell us the best part of their move was opening boxes and finding everything intact. That comes from trained packers and the right materials.

Why Choose Our Packing Services

Good packing saves money twice: fewer broken items, and a faster moving day because every box is the right size and ready to stack.

How Much Do Packing Services Cost?

Packing is priced by the time it takes and the materials used. Kitchens, closets, and fragile collections take the most time, so two homes of the same size can cost very differently to pack. The ranges below are typical local industry estimates for packing labor and materials. They are not a JT Melia quote. Moving is priced separately.

Home size Full packing (labor + materials) Kitchen & fragile only
1 bedroom apartment$300 to $600$200 to $350
2 bedroom home$500 to $900$250 to $450
3 bedroom home$800 to $1,500$350 to $600
4 bedroom home$1,200 to $2,200$450 to $800

Our Packing Process

Walk-Through & Estimate

We look at the home in person or by video, including cabinets, closets, and the garage, and note anything fragile, valuable, or oversized.

You get a written estimate for packing time and materials along with the move.

icon

Packing Day

The packers arrive with all materials, usually the day before the move. They start with the rooms you need least and leave essentials until last.

Each box is wrapped, filled, sealed, and labeled by room and contents.

Moving & Unpacking

On moving day the crew loads the packed boxes and delivers them to the right rooms.

If you chose unpacking, we unpack, place items on shelves and counters, and take the boxes and paper away.

Packing Service Areas

Our packers work across the metro, from the northern suburbs to the Inner Loop and Fort Bend.

Popular areas include The Woodlands, Klein, Porter, Atascocita, West University Place and Bellaire. See all service areas.

Kitchen, China & Fragile Items

The kitchen takes longer to pack than any other room and accounts for most broken items in a move.

Our packers wrap plates individually and stand them on edge in dish packs, where they are far stronger than lying flat. Glasses and stemware go into cartons with cell dividers. Small appliances are boxed with padding on every side, and pantry items are sealed so nothing leaks.

Fine china, crystal, collectibles, and heirlooms get extra layers and smaller boxes so they are never under heavy cartons. Lamps are packed with shades separate, and anything with glass is marked fragile and loaded last.

If you would rather do most of the packing yourself, our fragile-only service covers exactly these items.

Televisions, Art & Mirrors

Flat-screen televisions, framed art, and mirrors are some of the most commonly damaged items in a move, usually because they were wrapped in a blanket and leaned against something.

We pack televisions in purpose-built cartons with foam corners, and framed art and mirrors in telescoping mirror cartons that fit snugly around the piece. Glass tabletops and large mirrors stand on edge on the truck, never flat.

For marble, stone, sculptures, chandeliers, and pieces too valuable or unusual for a carton, we build custom wooden crates. Our guide to moving televisions and electronics covers what to do before the packers arrive.

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage Team

Packing for Storage & Long-Distance Moves

Boxes that go into storage or travel across the country are handled more and sit longer, so they are packed to a higher standard.

We use double-wall cartons, fill every void so contents cannot settle, and seal boxes against dust and humidity. Each carton is listed on the inventory that travels with the shipment or goes into storage with it.

Extra-careful packing is worth it when:

* Your belongings are going into storage for more than a few weeks.
* The move is long distance and the shipment will be on the road for days.
* Items are being shipped separately or by freight.
* You are moving antiques, collections, or family heirlooms.
* Boxes will be stacked in a vault or trailer under heavy furniture.

Packing Service Questions, Answered

Professional packing raises a few practical questions about timing, cost, and what you need to do.

Here are answers to the questions customers ask most often.

How much do packing services cost in Houston?

Arrow Down

Full packing for a two-bedroom home typically runs about $500 to $900 including materials, and a three-bedroom about $800 to $1,500. Kitchen-and-fragile packing costs less. We include packing in your written moving estimate.

How long does it take to pack a house?

Arrow Down

Most homes are packed in one day by a team of packers. Very large homes or homes with large collections may take two days. We usually pack the day before the move.

Do you bring the boxes and packing materials?

Arrow Down

Yes. Our packers bring everything: cartons in the right sizes, dish packs, glass dividers, wardrobe boxes, mirror cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, and tape.

Can you pack only some rooms?

Arrow Down

Yes. Partial packing is popular. Many customers have us pack the kitchen, glassware, and fragile items while they pack clothes, books, and the rest themselves.

Do you unpack at the new home?

Arrow Down

Yes. Unpacking can be added. We unpack boxes, place items on shelves and counters in the right rooms, and take the empty boxes and paper away.

What should I do before the packers arrive?

Arrow Down

Set aside anything you want to carry yourself, such as medication, jewelry, documents, chargers, and a few days of clothes. Empty the trash, and tell us about any items that should not be packed.

What will your packers not pack?

Arrow Down

Hazardous materials such as paint, propane, gasoline, aerosols, and cleaning chemicals, plus perishable food, plants, and open liquids. We also recommend you keep cash, jewelry, and important papers with you.

Are items you pack covered if they break?

Arrow Down

Items packed by our crew are handled by a licensed, insured moving company, which matters if something is damaged. Items you pack yourself are harder to claim on, which is one reason customers choose our packers for fragile rooms.

Can you pack for storage or a long-distance move?

Arrow Down

Yes. Boxes going into storage or traveling long distance are packed with double-wall cartons and extra cushioning, and listed on the inventory that goes with them.

Are your packers licensed and insured?

Arrow Down

Yes. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage is licensed by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV No. 0000005457) and holds US DOT No. 436264. Our packers are trained full-time employees.

Ready to Hand Off the Packing?
