Moving Boxes & Packing Supplies in Houston, TX

Packing yourself? Start with the same materials professional movers use. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage supplies moving boxes in every size, dish packs, wardrobe boxes, mirror cartons, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, and mattress bags, available for pickup at our Houston warehouse or delivered to your door.

Not sure how much you need? Tell us the size of your home and we will put together a supply kit, so you are not making three trips to the store halfway through packing.

Professional Moving Supplies From a Houston Moving Company

Most packing damage comes from the wrong box. Grocery store boxes are too weak to stack, too dirty for linens, and the wrong shape for plates and glasses. Thin tape lets go in the Houston heat. Newspaper leaves ink on everything it touches.

We sell the same cartons and materials our own packers use every day: sturdy corrugated boxes sized to stack evenly on a truck, dish packs built for kitchenware, wardrobe boxes with hanging bars, and clean packing paper that will not mark your belongings.

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage has packed and moved Houston homes since 1969. When you buy supplies from us, you also get advice from people who know how many boxes a three-bedroom kitchen really takes.

Trusted Moving Supplies Since 1969

Houston customers who pack themselves come to us for the right supplies and honest advice, and many hire us for the move once the boxes are ready.

How Much Do Moving Supplies Cost in Houston?

Moving supplies are sold by the item or as kits sized for your home. Buying a kit is usually the simplest way to get the right mix without overbuying. The prices below are typical Houston-area industry ranges for planning purposes. They are not a JT Melia price list. Ask us for current prices and kit contents.

Item or kit Typical use Typical price
Small / medium / large boxBooks, everyday items, linens$2 to $5 each
Dish packPlates, bowls, glassware$8 to $12 each
Wardrobe boxHanging clothes$15 to $25 each
Packing paper (bundle)Wrapping dishes and fragile items$20 to $30
1 bedroom supply kitBoxes, paper, tape for a small apartment$75 to $150
3 bedroom supply kitBoxes, specialty cartons, paper, tape$250 to $400
How much will I need?

As a rough guide, a one-bedroom apartment uses about 20 to 30 boxes and a three-bedroom home 60 to 90. Kitchens, books, and closets drive the count up. It is better to have a few extra small boxes than to overfill large ones.

Choosing the Right Box Sizes

The most common packing mistake is using boxes that are too big. A large box full of books can weigh more than anyone should lift and will burst at the bottom.

Use small boxes for books, canned goods, tools, and anything heavy. Medium boxes suit most kitchen items, toys, and electronics. Large boxes are for lighter, bulkier things such as pillows, towels, and lampshades, and extra-large boxes for bedding and comforters.

Keep boxes full but not bulging. Empty space lets contents shift and lets the box collapse when another is stacked on top, while an overstuffed box will not close flat and will not stack.

Uniform box sizes also load faster and more safely, because the crew can build stable tiers on the truck.

Packing Dishes, Glasses & Fragile Items

Kitchens break more things than any other room, and almost always for the same reason: the wrong box and not enough paper.

Dish packs are double-walled and built for kitchenware. Wrap plates individually and stand them on edge like records, where they are much stronger than lying flat. Use cell dividers for glasses and stemware, and fill every gap with crumpled paper so nothing moves when you shake the box.

Mark fragile boxes clearly and keep them light. For televisions, mirrors, and artwork, use purpose-made cartons, and for anything truly valuable or irreplaceable, ask about custom crating.

Supplies for Storage & Long-Distance Moves

Boxes that go into storage or travel long distance need to be stronger, because they are stacked higher, handled more, and sit for longer.

For those moves, use new double-wall cartons rather than reused boxes, seal every seam, and wrap furniture in stretch wrap and pads to keep out dust and humidity.

Extra protection is worth it when:

* Boxes are going into storage for more than a few weeks.
* The move is long distance or out of state.
* Mattresses and upholstered furniture need to stay clean.
* Electronics are being moved without their original packaging.
* Boxes will be stacked under heavy furniture.

Moving Supplies Questions, Answered

Buying supplies for a move raises a few practical questions.

Here are the ones Houston customers ask most often.

Where can I buy moving boxes in Houston?

Arrow Down

You can buy moving boxes and packing supplies from us. Pick them up at our Northwest Houston warehouse on Fairway Park Drive or have them delivered to your home.

Do you deliver packing supplies?

Arrow Down

Yes. We can deliver supplies anywhere in the Houston area. Call us with your order and preferred delivery date.

How many boxes do I need?

Arrow Down

A one-bedroom apartment typically needs 20 to 30 boxes, a two-bedroom 40 to 60, and a three-bedroom 60 to 90. Large kitchens, libraries, and closets need more.

What is a dish pack?

Arrow Down

A dish pack is a heavy double-walled box designed for kitchenware. Plates are wrapped and stood on edge, and glasses go in cell dividers, which protects them far better than an ordinary box.

Do you sell supply kits?

Arrow Down

Yes. We put together kits sized for apartments and homes, with the right mix of boxes, specialty cartons, paper, and tape.

Should I use bubble wrap or packing paper?

Arrow Down

Packing paper is best for most dishes and household items. Bubble wrap is better for very fragile, irregular, or valuable pieces. Most moves use both.

Can I use free or grocery store boxes?

Arrow Down

They work for light items, but they are often weak, mismatched in size, and not clean. For heavy items, kitchenware, and anything going into storage or long distance, new moving boxes are much safer.

How far in advance should I start packing?

Arrow Down

For a typical home, start two to three weeks before the move with rooms you use least, and leave the kitchen and essentials until the last few days.

Can you pack for me instead?

Arrow Down

Yes. Our packing services include all materials, and we can pack the whole home or just the kitchen and fragile items.

Do you also do the move?

Arrow Down

Yes. Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage is a licensed Houston moving company (TxDMV No. 0000005457, US DOT No. 436264). Once your boxes are packed, our crews can load, move, and unload everything.
