Downtown Houston Movers You Can Trust Since 1969

Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage has been moving Houston since 1969, and downtown is where moving gets technical. High-rise condos, historic loft conversions, freight elevators, dock height limits, and building COI requirements make downtown moves a different discipline from a driveway-and-garage suburb job. As a second-generation, family-owned company, we have spent five decades mastering that discipline. Whether you are moving into a tower near Discovery Green, out of a converted loft on Main Street, or relocating an office suite, our licensed and insured movers handle every detail so you do not have to.

About Johnnie T. Melia Moving & Storage

We are not a national franchise dispatching day laborers. Every crew member is a trained, full-time employee, and every move is backed by full Texas DMV licensing (TxDMV No. 0000005457), US DOT authority (No. 436264), cargo insurance, and an ATA ProMover certification held by fewer than 10 percent of moving companies in the country. Downtown building managers require exactly this level of documentation before a crew touches their dock, and ours is always ready.

Our Experience Moving in Downtown Houston

Every downtown move runs through three checkpoints, and we handle all of them before your moving day: the certificate of insurance your building requires on file, the freight elevator reservation that dictates your schedule, and the loading dock, with its clearance heights, time limits, and sometimes a security check-in for the crew. Our office confirms these details with your building management in advance, and our crews arrive with the paperwork done. We have also learned the quirks that only come from repetition: historic loft conversions often have beautiful but slow vintage elevators that change the timing math, weekend dock access differs from weekday access in many towers, and street-level staging on downtown blocks needs to respect tow-away zones and event closures. This is what five decades of Houston moving looks like in practice.

Our services include residential and commercial moving, long-distance relocation, packing and unpacking, storage solutions, and specialized moving for pianos, safes, and designer furnishings.

Commercial and Office Moving

Business downtime costs money, and downtown adds building rules on top. Our commercial movers work evenings and weekends, coordinate dock and elevator access with building management, and move office furniture, workstations, files, and equipment with minimal disruption. We have relocated everything from single suites to multi-floor offices in Houston’s downtown towers.

Loft and Historic Building Moving

Downtown’s converted warehouses and historic buildings come with freight elevators of a different era, unusual layouts, and oversized doors in some spots and narrow ones in others. We measure and plan before moving day, and we protect original finishes the way a hundred-year-old building deserves.

Moving out of Texas or across state lines? As an agent for National Van Lines, JT Melia provides fully coordinated long-distance and interstate moving services with door-to-door delivery. From one-bedroom units to full-floor condos, downtown towers are weekly work for our crews.

Below are average ranges for local moves in the Downtown Houston area. These are estimates, and your actual quote may be higher or lower depending on your specific situation.

Home size	Crew size	Est. hours	Avg local move cost

2 Bedroom	2 to 3 movers	4 to 6 hours	$550 to $950
3 Bedroom	3 movers	5 to 8 hours	$850 to $1,400
4 Bedroom	3 to 4 movers	7 to 10 hours	$1,200 to $2,000

What affects your price

Stairs and elevators, building requirements like freight elevator windows, specialty items (pianos, safes, artwork), packing services, distance between locations, time of year (summer moves cost more), and whether you need storage.

What does not change

Our hourly rates, our crew quality, and our commitment to no hidden fees. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Long-distance moves are priced differently, based on weight, distance, and services selected, and require a binding or non-binding estimate. Contact us for a free in-home or video survey for any move over 50 miles.
